If you do not experience some apprehensions about the Corona virus or covid-19 then you will not be human. There are several reasons that concern about the disease is spreading worldwide and the main reason is lack of information related to this disease.
To circumvent anxiety when such a situation occurs, some appropriate steps can be taken to make life easier through this epidemic.
We are all together during this time, but to maintain peace of mind, you can get the following help:
1- Knowledge is power- Listen or listen to reliable news sources and follow CDC’s advice to maintain your health.
2- Boost Immune System- Eat junk food diet well and clean it. Aim for lean protein (meats, poultry, fish, dairy), fresh or frozen vegetables (frozen may be your best choice because they are not controlled by anyone in the food market). Fresh or frozen fruits (Frozen may be your best choice again, as they are leftover or not handled).
3- Exercise- Remove worrying energy and keep running in fresh air and sunshine, minus the crowd of people. This will boost endorphins, increase serotonin (feel good chemical) in the brain and lift your spirits. It will also calm a hyperactive mind.
4- Logic and Common Sense- It is okay to be cautious and especially in this case. I would suggest that you take even more precautions during this but do not assume that anxiety and fear will serve you well. Take moments during the day and remind yourself that you are doing all that is necessary and the purpose of anxious anxiety is low.
5- Watch out for others- During a difficult public health crisis, the elderly often require additional health. By offering help, you pull yourself out of your head and it is therapeutic in itself.
6- Music, Hobbies & Quiet Activities – Calm your mind through anything that makes you interesting and gets you out of anxious, nervous mode. Lose yourself in the things that pull you out of your own anxious head. Lose yourself in the book you want to read but never had time to do so. Along with yoga, meditation is always helpful.
7- Make smart choices- Use your logical mind to choose activities that make sense to you. Short meals, rental movies, postponement of events that may be risky at the moment may be the best option with fewer friends or family.
8- Self Sooth- Once you learn to reassure and calm yourself, the adrenaline rush starts to decrease. We are what we think and being logical and careful at the same time is the best way to calm ourselves. If your life is interrupted due to the creation of fearful thoughts, then let go while you tell yourself the truth of the situation. Facts matter and they are your strength against unnecessary worry and nervousness.
9- Keep cool head- Focus on here and now. This is the safest place of all. Yes, plan for any future events to occur but there is a “what if” idea of remaining in the present moment. Nothing is just black or white in nature. There is always a gray area. Take a break from reading or watching the news before bed. Everyone needs a break from considering the situation, especially if getting a good night’s rest is your best defense against an over-anxious mind and body.
10- Communicate- Keep in touch with good friends and family. Even if you can’t be together, there are always online ways to connect through chatting or face-to-face conversations. Making the best out of a difficult situation works a little easier but stress helps release chemicals and results in a calm mind and body.
Above all, remember that you are not alone. Everything you are going through is different or unusual from anyone else. Discuss your feelings with friends and family and you will be pleasantly surprised how similar your feelings are to them.
Time takes care of many of these events and learning to go through them the calmest way possible is to your advantage. Thinking with a cool head, eating correctly, resting when tired and keeping the proper perspective on the situation is your greatest weapon against the anxiety and stress in these times.
